No Coincidences

There is a saying that states, “Nothing happens by accident. The Lord is directing each one of our steps,” and that is very true. But, what makes it difficult sometimes is when these steps aren’t what we planned for ourselves. According to Proverbs 19:21, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”

I had planned to go back to Haiti next May to begin the leadership conferences in Thiotte. The reason for going in May was because Thiotte is a very remote and mountainous part of Haiti where travel is difficult. To get there, dry river beds are used as roads and May is usually a dry time in Haiti. That’s why May was my plan, but it was not the Lord’s.

Due to a series of circumstances, the conference will be held this December instead, which isn’t always a very dry month. There are around 200 pastors and church leaders who will be attending and even though they were invited to the previous conferences, only about 12 could make it. The reason for that is because travel to and from Thiotte is difficult due to the mountainous terrain, and the distance to Port-au-Prince and Jacmel.

So, because they couldn’t come to us, we are going to them. By we, I mean Pastor Placide (one of my Haitian contacts and translator) and myself. We will have to rent a mechanically fit 4x4 truck to get up the dry river beds and mountain passes and what may make this journey a little more difficult is that we will have to travel there at night and there may be a chance of rain which can cause flash floods along the river beds. However, God is good and He will make the way there possible. Besides, I always love an adventure, especially if it is to do the Lord’s will.

Hopefully I will be able to get through the “Essentials of Christian Leadership” training and part of the “Church Growth” training this year. God willing I will be able to return next year to finish the “Church Growth” training and the training on Evangelism.

There is also a saying that states, “There is no such thing as a coincidence, just God's hand in a greater plan!” Back in September there was a pastor from Arcahaie visiting Canada who heard about my work in Haiti and wanted to meet with me. He came to my home and said that his church, and the surrounding churches in his area, need this teaching. So, God willing, we will meet again in December to put some plans in place to hold at least one, of the three conferences that I teach, at his church next year.

God is so good and it is an honor for me to serve Him in this way. As always, I ask for your prayers. Not just before the conference but during the conference as well. That is because there is always opposition from the enemy. As the Apostle Paul said in Ephesians 6:12, “For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.” Anywhere the Good News of Jesus Christ is proclaimed, there will be opposition, so please pray for protection and that the Holy Spirit would move in powerful and wonderful ways to equip our brothers and sisters in Christ to reach their nation for Jesus.

Also, if you feel led to support this trip financially please make your cheque payable to St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church and write in the memo section that it is for 2nd Wave Ministries. That way you will get a receipt and we will know that your donation is to be used to help feed the attendees and help pay travelling expenses for those who have to come in from the surrounding region. Many have no resources at all so they need all the help they can get to come to the conference.

Thank you once again for your past and ongoing support in this much needed ministry.

Many Blessings!

Pastor Jonathan Baird
